Canon Policy

A Brief OOC History of Yung Weyr

Yung first opened on September 5th, 2004. It made its home on the then-free host Avidgamers and rapidly became popular among canon fans for the quality of its posts as well as the invention of its plots. As time progressed, Yung grew to over a hundred and fifty members. Roleplayers came and went with the tide of clutches, but Yung went on. It was even officially approved by Anne McCaffrey in 2006 and listed among the recognised forum, MUSHes, MOOs, MU*s and other types of roleplay on her website.

Then, at the beginning of July 2007, Avidgamers crashed. Sustaining the heavy losses of over half its membership as well as all of its early posts, Yung rebuilt itself on its own server, kindly contributed by Marri - now known as mistress of PHP, HTML, and all other things Internetly - and moved on. It has yet to catch up to quite its former quantity of posts or members, which means it's a middle-aged site with the friendliness and policies of a brand new Weyr.

Yung's Canon Policy

What is 'canon'? Some believe that it's an adherence to McCaffrey's statements in and out of interviews about her world. Others claim that it's strictly what is consistent in her books. Still others have decided that it's keeping it down to the original six colors. (Yes, we counted Ruth on purpose.)

We at Yung follow the rules McCaffrey set down for Pern up to (and discounting) The Skies of Pern. Any facts published after Skies will not be considered canon at Yung unless specifically noted. However, in order to minimize your confusion, we've listed the specific world rules we'll follow at Yung when it comes to canon.

  • Given the proper circumstances and mindset, dragonriders can kill other dragonriders. We play under the assumption that the Weyrs' ingrained prejudices have caused riders to ignore the backlash of psychic shared pain the deaths give their dragons, and their tolerance of that pain has started to innur their dragons to it as well.

  • We do accept Todd's idea that whers have colors. We have taken very little else about whers from him. Our specific policy on wher canon is detailed on a private page.

  • White/albino dragons do not exist in our timeline. Nor will they ever.

  • Two queen eggs in one clutch are possible. Unlikely, but possible.

  • Girls can Impress blues and greens as well as golds, but this will occur rarely. The amount of female Candidates permitted at a clutch with no gold will be a great deal smaller, if girls are allowed to Stand at all.

  • Blue/greenriders may be of any sexuality.

  • Hides are not common, although woodcrafters have recently fallen to pressing bark in order to fulfill demand at the Artists' CraftHall and the Harper Hall. For the most part, however, sand is used to practice and the resultant scrawls are inscribed on hides for permanence. Wax tablets are also possible, though rarer than hides. Slates are most likely to be used by Harpers in their teachings.

  • Green dragons were genetically altered to be incapable of clutching. Firestone does not affect their fertility. Golds cannot chew firestone, however; their bodies will reject it.

  • Dragonets Impress based on sexuality and whether the thoughts that the Candidates project feel suited to them. Therefore, greenriders will not all be flirtatious and airheaded, goldriders will not always be strong-minded and sympathetic, etc.

  • The average Pernese does not keep pets. If a character has a creature, the creature will be put to use. Canines may turn the spit, felines may hunt pests in the Weyr, firelizards may be used to pass messages at large.

  • Runners are not kept at the Weyr, due to dragons' effects on herd animals.

  • Flight stand-ins do not exist. "The dragon decides; the rider complies." For a dragon to consider the rider's preferences is rare.

  • It does not necessarily follow that the winner of a flight becomes the Weyrmate of the person they flew.

  • Dragons are capable of basic logic and planning a little way into the future. Their intelligences differ (and we do not subscribe to the concept that metallics are more intelligent than chromatics) from dragon to dragon.

Clarifications will be added as necessary.
