Laws of Yung Weyr
Yung is not difficult. Its rules can, in effect, be summed up by three two-word rules (that are followed be several lines of explanation):

1. Be literate. We mean this in the roleplay definition of literacy: it does not ask only that you can read, but also that you can write with a certain skill. That is to say - write thoughtful posts that balance action and reflection in something that other roleplayers can reply to, and will want to associate their own characters with. Create a character that can't be summed up in only five words without omitting significant details about who they are. Don't use chatspeak, and ensure that there are no significant typos or grammatical errors in either your character or your posts.
2. Be canon. The world we play in belongs, not to us, but to McCaffrey - the least you can do is show her the respect due to Pern's creator by adhering to its rules (though slight bending may be overlooked). Thus, your character shall not have one violet eye and one silver with blue hair, your dragon will be one of the five colors and not out of the ordinary for any of them, and there will be no female MasterCrafters.
3. Be sensible. Do not expect the administration to accept a Sue - or, indeed, any beautifully vivacious female - with ease. Do not strive to get into Yung with an ordinary history that might be suited for any other Weyr. Do not apply with several firelizards - it might not even be a very good idea to apply with a pet at all. Behave politely towards the members, and never godmode or powerplay. Simple things.

Feeling suspicious? Certain that there will be some invisible rule you'll trip over? Go ahead and read the longer set of rules, then.

Guidelines for Characters

  • Transfers may not come from Benden, Ruatha, or an invented Weyr/Hold/Hall. Don't play outside of the time period. No Southern transfers, no Weyrhold-born. Never forget that they're not ordinary transfers. They threw in their lot with a renegade Weyrwoman. Spies and Istans are perfectly acceptable, but remember to denote whether they've been recently transferred for Yung's discovery or whether they joined when Yung first went back in time. If the former, the Istans are transferring incompetents and spies - if you have an idea that doesn't fit into either category, email yungweyr@gmail.com and it can be discussed.
  • Unlike other canon Weyrs, Candidates are easily had, provided a suitable history can be written for them - a common one is that their Searchrider became a Yung rider. This is, however, due to the logic that it's preferrable to have many Candidates than Hold and Hallbrats under false pretenses, idling out as soon as the Searchdragon passes without choosing them. Do not take their rank lightly and for granted; standards will not be lowered for them. Remember, dragonmen probably won't Search from any Holds save those that tithed to their own former Weyrs!
  • Yung will not accept a Hear-All-(Insert Creature Here). Dragons, firelizards, whers, felines, canines, dolphins and fruitbaskets are included under this category. There is no point. A roleplayer who needs a composite of "special" characteristics to play is clearly not the type of roleplayer Yung needs.
  • Despite the Weyr's status as loose canon, pets such as flying elephants and pet foxes, wolves or wherries will not work. Tattoos, blue hair, albinos, purple eyes, telekinesis, psychic powers... No.
  • All graduated dragonriders must be over twenty Turns. Weyrlings may be as young as fourteen, but this - and Weyrling transfers - is not encouraged. Male Candidates can range from ages 10-19 and female Candidates may be from 13-24. The most Impressible range, however, is 16-19 Turns, and this will be taken into consideration come clutchtime. Female Candidates over twenty must be gold-only.
  • Dragonriders are preferred over twenty Turns. Weyrling transfers may be as young as fourteen and as old as twenty-one. (However, though Weyrling transfers are acceptable, they are rather unusual and preferred not to occur. If it does, include a plot sample under the Character Comments.) Male Candidates can range from the ages of 10-19 (but the more Impressible ones will be from 16-19), and female Candidates may be from 13-24. (Over twenties means that the character is a gold-only Candidate.. decreasing chances of Impressing at all.) Keep in mind that male dragons are capable of chase after two Turns, and all females will begin to rise at approximately a Turn and a half, lest the character is inadvertently traumatised.
  • Any dragon color may be transferred. However, bronzes and golds are rarely accepted - blues, browns and greens are infinitely preferrable, and better. Female dragonriders in general are accepted on the same standard as bronzes and golds; ergo rarely.
  • Do not create beautiful, leaderly males with dramatically sad pasts, or "ugly" females that are willowy, with long blonde hair and a tragic history of abuse. No.
  • No genetic mutations or severe past injuries that damaged one of their senses permanently for any character if they are a Candidate, whether it be a deformed blob of a nose, the fact that they are blind/deaf/mute, the fact that they have differently colored eyes, are albinos, etc. If (s)he has a missing limb or is in possession of a defect of some sort, they're gone. There are plenty of other ways to make a characters interesting without mutilating them.
  • Females - even the ones that ride blues - will not have shortened names beyond nicknames.
  • Descriptions should be highly detailed - not in the sense of wandering words, but in order to create a deep character.

    Guidelines for Pets
  • No firelizards without extremely good reason.
  • Only dragons can communicate in clear speech. Firelizards cannot communicate in anything other than images. Whers can occasionally transmit a word or two, but the majority of their mental languages emerges in sensory perception - do not portray them otherwise.
  • Keep the number of pets to a reasonable amount.
  • Wherhandlers are welcome with whers of any color! Be aware that Yung adheres to the firelizard forms of Impression - i.e. anyone of any gender and sexuality can Impress any color of wher.
  • No names ending in 'th' or 'sk' unless the character is a dragon or a wher.
  • Regardless of whether or not they have chewed firestone, there will be no clutching greens.
  • In the case of Weyrlings, do not advance their abilities beyond the most recent lesson they've attended unless it has been cleared with the administrator.

    Guidelines for Behavior
  • Five colors McCaffrey created, and there shall remain only five colors of dragonkind. Ruth was an anomaly, a mutation that will not be available here. The only dragons that won't be any of the above colors will be the embryos, and that's only because the administrators won't have determined their colors yet.
  • All plots - commonly defined as non-romantic intrigues involving more than three people - must be cleared by the administration before they can be implemented. (Examples include: character pregnancies, flights and hatchings, situations involving violence or character death.)
  • Firelizard and (occasionally) dragon clutches' sizes must be cleared with the Weyrwoman before it is ICly permitted for them to clutch.
  • Be respectful of and polite to others.
  • Kindly refrain from advertising any other site. Yung only accepts affiliates at present.
  • Rebellious or not, all characters will respect the Weyr Council, Lords, Mastercrafters, and others of high rank. Or they can go play with the Holdless.
  • In the case of having multiple characters, never let the female characters outnumber the males.
  • All characters require descriptions and approval before they can be roleplayed, regardless of whether the roleplayer has been accepted to the site or not.
  • If a conflict should arise, please notify the administrators so that it can be cleared up as soon as possible.
  • Keep the situations realistic, canon, and rooted in Third Pass! For instance, no advanced technology or anachronistic sayings.
  • While swearing is permissible, attempt to keep the atmosphere on the site below R.

    Guidelines for Roleplay
  • All roleplay posts must be written in third-person perspective and past tense.
  • Try not to post one-liners OOCs on the IC boards. It gets incredibly annoying for the people who have to backread to go through an entire page of one-line OOCs that say nothing more than "Lol!!!" and "Kk." Overfrequent repetition will result in a deletion of the post, and all complaints regarding that will be deleted too. Reserves are not counted unless there are a thousand from the same person.
  • Godmoding (making a character invincible) is never permitted. Powerplaying (controlling someone else's character) may be permitted in minimal amounts, if at all, but only to make the roleplay go faster, and only with the other roleplayer's permission. (IE: "He slung an arm easily about her shoulders, steering her towards the kitchens.") Of course, powerplaying may also be allowed during flights, wherein the female may control the general movements of the males ("..diving towards them, she was rather gratified to see that they scrambled to get out of her way.."). At the end of the flight, when the female mails the winning male, that male may powerplay in order to ascertain that his dragon catches the dragoness in question. Nowhere else without permission.
  • Write posts for clarity rather than a display of vocabulary, please! Nothing makes things more choppy than a repetition of 'viridian orbs'.
  • Mirroring post lengths is considered nothing if not polite, unless it is absolutely impossible to find enough material. This means no one-liners: there is an official minimum of four sentences, but posts upward of two paragraphs are preferred.
  • Candidates are not allowed weapons in-character unless it has been cleared with an administrator. Given the danger of the era, adults may have a few knives. All bigger weapons must - again! - have permission. Sadly, size does matter.
  • Romance is forbidden between Junior Weyrlings and any other Weyrfolk. Senior Weyrlings are permitted slight romance, for their dragons are close to maturity. Dragonriders, Weyrfolk, Holderfolk and Holdless are permitted as much romance as they like, provided it's not with those forbidden.
  • Any threads with mature topics must have a warning as to their content in the title.
  • Grammar and spelling are very important. Of such terrible importance, in fact, that chatspeakers will be gutted with rusty spikes.
  • Separate IC rules are used for Candidates and Weyrlings - all Candidates and Weyrlings are expected to know them and consult them as necessary.

Note: There are IC circumstances and OOC circumstances. If you break the OOC rules, you'll be punished accodingly... but IC circumstances simply have IC consequences (fun for plots) unless it's something that goes into OOC. (ex. godmoding, plotting without permission, etc.)
